Quality of light

Reading Notes Option 1

For todays assignment I had the most fun with backlighting.  I had never really taken a photo using back lighting before without completely silhouetting my subject.  I really wanted to play with back lighting hair.  My favorite photo this week was the last one on this post of Bri.  In order to not silhouette her I had to meter for the light that was on her face and and not the light behind her.  If I were to meter for the light behind her the shutter speed and aperture would have been higher to let less light in.  This also would have underexposed Bri's face.  Instead, the light behind her is slightly over exposed giving her hair a bright glow.

Reading notes option 3

I see this man sitting at Mama Mia's every morning by himself.  He is always just staring off into the distance smoking his cigarette.  I was very intrigued by him.  Today, I went up to him to see if I could learn more about him.  I sat down at his table and discovered that he spoke virtually no english.  The owner of Mama Mia's stood by me and translated for me.  He was such a sweet old man and told me (in greek) that i should be in a vase of water because I am pretty like a flower.  When he agreed to let me take his picture I wanted to try a couple different things.  With this picture, I wanted to have it be from his perspective.  He is never looking at the other customers or interacting with anyone; he is just always staring out into the distance.  I set the aperture low to create a shallow depth of field to blur the background.  My hope was to create mystery in what he was gazing at.  I didn't feel as though his eyes or the front of his face were the most interesting part about him; his disposition was what intrigued me.

"The Face of the Greek Gyro"

The objective of this assignment was to shoot pictures that would fit one of 4 magazines given to us by our professor Tamara.  Since I am in Greece, I chose the magazing Condé Nast Traveler.  I wanted to focus on the food aspect of the Traveler.  There is this little hole in the wall restaurant call Gyro Stop that we probably spend too much of our money at.  The gyros from there are delicious!  Every time we walk in there the main worker (possibly the owner), Illia, helps us learn greek.  He is so nice to us and gives us a discount every time we eat there.  This restaurant isn't sugar coated on the outside.  People don't choose to eat here because of the extravagant appearance.  This is a place that the locals love to eat at because of the kind face of Illia and his fast, friendly, service.
